Real Madrid have announced that Julen Lopetegui will take over as Real Madrid manager after the World Cup.

Zinedine Zidane walked away from his post at Real Madrid after the Champions League final, having won the competition three times in a row.

Lopetegui has been Spain manager since he took over in 2016, and will leave his post with the national team for the Madrid job after this summer’s tournament.

Before he took over as Spain boss, Lopetegui was Porto manager for two years. Before that, he was in charge of Spain’s U21s, who won the 2013 European Championships. That U21 side featured the likes of David De Gea, Thiago, Koke and Rodrigo Moreno, all of whom have made it into the Spain squad for this summer’s World Cup.

He also played for both Real Madrid and Barcelona, although he only played one league game for Madrid, and five for Barcelona.

Most of his playing career was spent at Club Deportivo Logroñés and Rayo Vallecano.

Real Madrid were keen on appointing Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, but were put off by the hefty fee they would have had to pay for the Argentine after he recently signed a five year contract.
