Sir Billy Boston, the first player knighted in rugby league’s 130-year history, has died aged 92. The Wigan winger died overnight in hospital, the Welsh Rugby Union confirmed on Tuesday, four days after the funeral of Lady Joan, his wife of 70 years.
Born in Cardiff in 1934 and raised in Tiger Bay, Boston was overlooked by his home union club and caught the eye of league scouts on national service in the north. He signed for Wigan in 1953 aged 19 and crossed the line 478 times in 488 games, winning three Challenge Cups and the Championship.
Within a year of switching codes he was on the 1954 Great Britain tour of Australia and New Zealand, the first black British player to tour down under. He scored 24 tries in 31 appearances for Great Britain and won the 1960 World Cup, scoring in the 10-3 final win over Australia at Odsal. His 571 career tries have been bettered only by Brian Bevan, BBC Sport reported.
Sir Billy Boston, one of the best loved and most iconic figures in the history of Welsh sport, has passed away peacefully at the age of 92. The most famous son of Tiger Bay died in his adopted home of 74 years, Wigan.

Wigan owner Mike Danson said Boston “was everybody’s hero”, adding: “His achievements in rugby league were extraordinary, and his knighthood was a fitting recognition of a career that brought great credit to Wigan and to the game.”
Appointed an MBE in 1986 and immortalised in statues at Wembley, Wigan and Cardiff, Boston had been diagnosed with dementia by the time his knighthood arrived in 2025. Tributes were still arriving across British sport on Tuesday, in a summer that has already claimed other giants of the game, among them AC Milan and Italy legend Franco Baresi.
