Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed the news to the assembled media.
A deal is in place between Bayern and United and Rummenigge said Schweinsteiger was looking for 'a new experience'.
Schweinsteiger has scored 45 goals for Bayern in 323 games. He has won eight league titles and a Champions League with the current Bundesliga champions.
