Malcom is in the middle of a transfer window tug of war

Roma had made an official announcement on Twitter. Their fans were waiting in the airport, ready to welcome their new hero to Rome. Malcom was on his way from Bordeaux to Italy, ready to sign for his new club. The wheels were well and truly in motion.

That was until Barcelona swept in, disrupted everything and poached him from under Roma’s nose. It’s almost Willian/Spurs/Chelsea levels of bastardry from Barcelona, which must be respected.

Barcelona have now confirmed the signing of Malcom from Bordeaux for a fee of €41m. The Brazilian winger has signed a five year contract with the La Liga champions, taking his contract until the end of the 2022/23 season. He will undergo his medical on Wednesday morning. Barça better hope another club don’t come and try to snatch him away in the meantime.

Several Premier League clubs had expressed interest in the Brazilian winger, most notably Everton this summer after Spurs’ January approach led to nothing.

His form in Ligue 1 has made him one of European football’s hottest prospects, and once again Barcelona have won the race to sign him. Malcom will join an attack boasting Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Ousmane Dembélé and Philippe Coutinho, so he may struggle to break into the team early on. Although, that depends on whether Barça boss Ernesto Valverde will stick to his asymmetrical 4-4-2 system that helped them win La Liga last season.

And hey, you can be sure that the Roma Twitter account will have some fire content on the way after this debacle.
