Aston Villa equaliser stands despite Chelsea claims Grealish fouled Christensen

Chelsea dropped more points as Aston Villa took a point from Stamford Bridge

Chelsea players were left angered as Aston Villa scored an equaliser at Stamford Bridge seconds after what they felt was a foul by Jack Grealish on Andreas Christensen.

Olivier Giroud had given Frank Lampard’s side the lead in the first half, but Anwar El Ghazi levelled for Villa shortly after the interval. The goal proved enough for Villa to take a point, and was followed by complaints from several Chelsea players who felt play should have been stopped before the ball reached El Ghazi.

Grealish and Christensen both hit the deck after colliding shortly after the Villa man poked a pass down the flank to El Ghazi. While the Chelsea defender remained on the floor, Grealish picked himself up soon after, playing the ball to Matty Cash who provided the cross from which El Ghazi scored the equaliser.

Despite the protests of several Chelsea players, the goal was allowed to stand.

Following on from their loss to Arsenal on Boxing Day, the result sees Chelsea continue their recent slump in form. On a day when Thomas Tuchel was linked with his job, the pressure is steadily building on Frank Lampard with his side six points behind league leaders Liverpool having played one more game.
