Arsenal want Inter captain on their books, according to reports

Kevin Beirne

Arsenal are reportedly preparing a bid for Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi.

According to Italian paper Tuttosport, Arsene Wenger has identified the 22-year-old as the man to lead the Gunners’ line as Theo Walcott’s injury woes continue and Olivier Giroud turns 30 at the start of next season.

Icardi has scored 27 goals in 48 games since making the move from Sampdoria, but Inter are likely to demand £28m for the Argentine striker as they brace themselves for a number of January bids.

Premier League rivals Liverpool and Chelsea are also thought to be interested in the former Barcelona youth team product, whom both Liverpool and Arsenal attempted to sign as a teenager.
