Sinner was two sets down when the incident occurred
British sporting legend Andy Murray took to Twitter/X last night to slam a key decision made by Wimbledon chiefs during the fourth-round match between world-number-one Jannik Sinner and Grigor Dimitrov.
With 34-year-old Bulgarian tennis star Dimitrov two-sets up against heavy favourite Sinner and on the brink of a huge upset, bosses at Wimbledon decided to close the roof.
This interrupted play for 13-minutes, breaking up Dimitrov's momentum and forcing both players to cool down in the middle of an intense contest.
Murray said: “So ridiculous to close the roof at this stage of the match. At least an hour of light left….well over a set of tennis can still be played..its an outdoor tournament!”
Just minutes after play resumed, as the third set reached a score of 2-2, Dimitrov hit the court floor in agony, with an injured pectoral muscle.
Sinner was the first over to check on his rival, supporting a tearful Dimitrov.
The incident ultimately meant Dimitrov was unable to resume play so retired, allowing Sinner to pass into the quarter finals against the odds.
After the match was officially concluded Sinner, said: "I don't know what to say. He is an incredible player and we all saw this today.
"He has been so unlucky in the past couple of years. He is an incredible player who is a good friend of mine. We understand each other very well off the court. Seeing him in this position - if there was a chance for him to be in the next round he would deserve it. I hope he has a speedy recovery.
"I don't take this as a win at all, this is just an unfortunate moment for us to witness.”
It is yet another setback for Dimitrov who has retired injured at each of his past five Grand Slam appearances.
