Andrea Consigli has explained his bizarre Serie A own goal

You may have missed it amid all the Jamie Vardy drama on Sunday, but Andrea Consigli scored an own goal for the ages.

The Italian goalkeeper, playing for Sassuolo, seemed to have an utter brain-fart as he messed up a clearance so badly that he ended up gently stroking the ball into the bottom corner of his own net. Less-than-serious claims of a both teams to score bet soon materialised, but proved wide of the mark as the score was already 2-1 to opponents. So, how can we explain Consigli's actions? Well, the man himself has given it a go. "There's certainly been a touch of superficiality on my side that exposed me to a few extra risks. I was overconfident and I tried a first-touch play in the wrong position," he said after the incident. "Luckily I don't make many mistakes like this. It's part of my job, which has good and bad sides." Football can be unforgiving, and no doubt his error will be remembered for a long time. It's now up to the 29-year-old to regain the confidence of fans and casual observers, especially if he wants to remain on the radar of outgoing Azzurri coach Antonio Conte or his successor.
