“The shot was low. The fight was just getting interesting”

Amir Khan has posted an image of the punch that brought a bizarre end to his WBO world welterweight title fight against Terence Crawford.

The picture appears to show a fresh angle on the hit that led to the end of the fight when Khan’s team told the referee he was unable to continue. Watch a video of the incident here:

Crawford was the favourite to defend his title in New York and lived up to expectation when he floored Khan in the opening round. The American continued to dominate his opponent before catching Khan in the groin in the sixth round.

The Bolton-born fighter has faced accusations of taking ‘a way out’ following the end of the bout at Madison Square Garden. However, Khan said the stoppage was due purely due to the low blow.

Posting an image of the punch, Khan wrote on social media: “Peeing blood. The shot was low. The fight was just getting interesting. Well done team Terrance. I never quit, I rather get knocked out cold then quit. Good night. Thank you New York.”

“I would never quit, I’d rather get knocked out,” Khan previously insisted in a post-match press conference.

“I’m just one of them fighters. I have been knocked out because I try to win fights.”

He added: “I didn’t quit. I was hit with a low blow in the balls. I’ve not seen the video but it was a low blow. But look, if you guys think I quit, no problem. I’ve never quit from a fight, but Crawford is a great fighter and he beat me tonight.”

“I could feel it in my stomach and legs. I said ‘I can’t move’,” Khan added. “There was no point taking five minutes out, I could not continue. I am not one to give up. I was hit by a hard shot below the belt.

“I couldn’t continue as the pain was too much.”
