Ajax forward Quincy Promes has been arrested in connection with a stabbing that occurred earlier this year, say reports in the Netherlands.

According to De Telegraaf, the 28-year-old Dutch international was arrested on suspicion ‘of assault resulting in serious physical injury’.

The incident is alleged to have occurred at a family gathering back in late July, but last month an injured relative decided to press charges.

De Telegraaf report that Promes was at a family gathering in a large shed in a town just outside Amsterdam, when a scuffle broke out involving him and a relative.

Other family members are believed to have stepped in to try and intervene.

“A relative was seriously injured and suffered, among other things, very serious knee injuries,” according to the report in De Telegraaf.

A police spokesperson told news agency AFP that a “28-year-old man has been arrested”, but would not give further information as to the suspect’s identity.

The police spokesperson added that the suspect was in custody, although a decision has not been taken on whether or not to release him on bail.

Ajax have so far refused to comment, but Promes was not involved in their usual Sunday training session.

Promes was part of the Ajax squad that was top of the Eredivisie in 2019/20 when the league was voided due to the coronavirus pandemic. They were granted Champions League qualification alongside AZ Alkmaar.

Amsterdam born and bred, Promes joined his hometown club from Sevilla in 2019 for around €15 million.

He briefly played for the Ajax academy as a youngster, but made his breakthrough at FC Twente, where he netted 11 goals in 34 games. A move to Spartak Moscow followed, and Promes’ 59 goals in 115 games made him the team’s star man. He was was named 2017 Footballer of the Year in Russia.

Promes has made 46 appearances for the Dutch national team since 2014, scoring seven goals.
