According to De Telegraaf, the 28-year-old Dutch international was arrested on suspicion 'of assault resulting in serious physical injury'.

The incident is alleged to have occurred at a family gathering back in late July, but last month an injured relative decided to press charges.

De Telegraaf report that Promes was at a family gathering in a large shed in a town just outside Amsterdam, when a scuffle broke out involving him and a relative.

Other family members are believed to have stepped in to try and intervene.

"A relative was seriously injured and suffered, among other things, very serious knee injuries," according to the report in De Telegraaf.

A police spokesperson told news agency AFP that a "28-year-old man has been arrested", but would not give further information as to the suspect's identity.

The police spokesperson added that the suspect was in custody, although a decision has not been taken on whether or not to release him on bail.

Ajax have so far refused to comment, but Promes was not involved in their usual Sunday training session.

Promes was part of the Ajax squad that was top of the Eredivisie in 2019/20 when the league was voided due to the coronavirus pandemic. They were granted Champions League qualification alongside AZ Alkmaar.

Promes has made 46 appearances for the Dutch national team since 2014, scoring seven goals.
