Olympic champion’s nan steals the show after Team GB’s first gold

We are all Mavis

Rob Burnett

Team GB are off and running with their first medals of the Rio Olympics.

Overnight Britain’s Jazz Carlin took the silver medal in the women’s 400m freestyle, coming second to the USA’s Katie Ledecky.

And just before Carlin took to the water Adam Peaty, 21, took Britain’s first gold of the games when he romped home in first place in the 100m breaststroke – smashing his own world record, which he had set just 24 hours earlier.

He finished with a time of 57.13sec, more than a second and a half quicker than his nearest rival, South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh

“This is what you dream of,” he is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

“Every time you want to go back to bed at 4am when the alarm goes off and it’s still dark outside, this makes it all worthwhile.”

While Adam was of course thrilled, back home in Staffordshire his family was over the moon – none more so than his nan Mavis, who has become an overnight hit on Twitter – racking up an extra 3,000 followers over the weekend.

She tweeted this before the final – showing he isn’t afraid of an emoji or two:

And she was the proudest grandmother in Britain after he took the gold:

And it seems Adam’s fans have taken Mavis to their hearts as well.

And just to prove she Mavis really does have a sense of humour, this is her new Twitter bio:
