Such sad news

A man who died in a cliff accident while on holiday with his family in Mallorca has been identified as a former professional footballer.

Mourad Lamrabatte, formerly of Dutch Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem, was on holiday in Santa Ponsa near Magaluf with his wife and kids where he attempted a 35-metre cliff jump into the water below.

Video footage caught by his wife showed Lamrabatte looking over the cliff face before then deciding to jump off it. As the former footballer did so, his wife can be heard shouting “oh my God” as they witnessed the tragic event unfold.

Autopsy results later clarified that Lamrabatte hadn’t died directly as a result of the injuries suffered from the cliff fall, but from drowning while in a state of semi-consciousness.

Vitesse paid tribute in a statement on social media

Lamrabatte had recently only just announced his retirement from football and following the awful news of his death, his former side Vitesse paid their respects to their former striker in a tribute on social media.

In a statement released by the club, they said: “Vitesse has received the sad news that Mourad Lamrabatte has tragically died.

“The former Jong Vitesse striker had just turned 31.

“He wore the club colours during the 2010/2011 season, when he was part of the U23 team which won the U23 cup that season.

“In July 2010 he scored in a first team exhibition game.”

Meanwhile a follow up statement from a club spokesperson said: “Vitesse wishes Mourad’s family and friends a lot of strength in coping with their great loss.”

Local authorities on the Balearic Island have confirmed that an investigation is still ongoing into the incident.
