5 sacked managers that deserved more time

Cian Murray

Liverpool have finally parted ways with Brendan Rodgers.

The Northern Irish man may have all the PR expertise of a poorly cooked mackerel. Nonetheless, his win percentage is only bettered by one Liverpool manager (Rafael Benitez) during the Premier League era and many people believe he was given the chop too early.

Here are five other managers who will feel like they should have been given more time.

Carlo Ancelotti, Chelsea

Winning the FA Cup and Premier League double in your first year in charge isn’t enough to satisfy the Chelsea big-wigs when your second year is barren.

Ancelotti went on to better things with both Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid and is now in the running to take over at Anfield, although Jürgen Klopp is the clear favourite.

Chris Hughton, Newcastle

When Hughton took over Newcastle, they had just been relegated, had a wage bill which was sky high and fans that were totally disillusioned with the club. He got them back into the Premier League, got rid of the dead wood and brought in attractive football.

Of course, this is the craziest club in all the land, so doing a job like that was only going to end one way for him… the sack.

Harry Redknapp, Spurs

Redknapp got Spurs into the Champions League after being forced to sell his best players repeatedly. The season before he got sacked, the White Hart Lane club finished fourth and only missed out on the Champions League because Chelsea won the trophy that season.

Bolton Wanderers v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League

Vicente del Bosque, Real Madrid

Del Bosque is now known as the legendary manager that brought unprecedented success to the Spanish national team. Before that he was the Madrid manager that won two European Cups and two La Liga titles in four years. Of course, this did not stop him from getting the sack from Los Blancos.

Roberto Di Matteo, Chelsea

Di Matteo restored order to Chelsea after Andre Villas Boas’ disastrous tenure. He did so by winning the club’s first Champions League and also bringing an FA Cup title to the club. Most fans thought he should have been given more time. Roman Abramovich had different ideas.
