5-0 down after 21 mins – internet reacts to Tottenham’s hellish start against Newcastle

Charlie Herbert

A new low for Spurs

It was one of the biggest games of the season in the race for Champions League football in the Premier League as Spurs travelled to Newcastle – and it was all over after less than a quarter of the game.

Tottenham found themselves 3-0 after 8 minutes, with Jacob Murphy goals either side of a Joelinton goal, and 5-0 down after just 21 minutes as Aleksander Isak got in on the act by scoring twice in two minutes.

With manager Cristian Stellini’s decision to go with a back four already going down as one of the worst tactical gambles of recent memory at this point, Spurs were being humiliated – and the internet was loving it.

Here were some of the best reactions to one of the most remarkable first halfs in Premier League history, and one of the worst days in Tottenham’s.

Many couldn’t help but remember Antonio Conte’s comments in his final days before leaving the club, when he criticised Tottenham’s players, owner Daniel Levy, and pretty much the entire mentality at the club.

In the end, it finished 6-1 to Newcastle. A Harry Kane goal was scant consolation for Spurs after half time, and was followed by a Callum Wilson to get Newcastle’s sixth of the afternoon.

The result leaves Tottenham’s Champions League hopes in tatters, whilst the Toon look set for a return to Europe’s elite next season as they sit in third in the table, six points clear of Spurs in fifth.

Tottenham fans may well now be looking over their shoulders, with Aston Villa, Liverpool and Brighton all breathing down their necks.
