Dreaming of sipping Aperol Spritz on Italy's Amalfi Coast but not so keen on the flights, airport queues and soaring holiday costs? It turns out Britain has its own version – and it's been officially crowned the country's best "destination dupe".
The picturesque Cornish fishing village of Port Isaac has taken the top spot in a new poll of 10,000 Brits, with respondents naming it the UK's answer to the Amalfi Coast thanks to its dramatic cliffs, turquoise coves, pastel cottages and winding coastal roads.
Perched on Cornwall's rugged north coast, Port Isaac is one of Britain's most photogenic seaside villages. Its narrow streets tumble down towards a historic harbour, while the surrounding coastline offers spectacular sea views, hidden coves and crystal-clear waters that wouldn't look out of place in southern Europe.
The findings come as more Britons swap overseas breaks for holidays closer to home. Research commissioned by Travelodge found that almost half (44 per cent) of people have replaced a trip abroad with a UK staycation over the past year, while 94 per cent said they would consider holidaying in Britain if it offered scenery comparable to famous European destinations.
Rising travel costs are one of the biggest reasons for the shift, with more than half (56 per cent) saying the increasing expense of going abroad has put them off booking overseas holidays. Airport queues, flight delays and overcrowded destinations were also among the biggest frustrations cited by travellers.
Port Isaac topped a list of UK beauty spots said to rival some of Europe's most famous destinations:
When choosing a destination dupe, Brits said value for money, accommodation and scenery were the biggest priorities, while seaside locations proved significantly more popular than city breaks or mountain escapes.
A Travelodge spokesperson said: "Why brave airport queues and flight cancellations when world-class holiday views are right here on our doorstep? From pastel coastal towns to dramatic alpine landscapes, Britain's 'destination dupes' offer all the charm, beauty, and atmosphere of an overseas escape, without the travel hassle.
"When it comes to getting maximum holiday inspiration for minimum spend, you'd better get a Travelodge. With hotels in hundreds of stunning locations across the country, we're here as your ultimate, great-value base for an unforgettable UK adventure."
