Since lockdown began, and the already underfunded NHS became ever more strained by the covid-19 pandemic, there have been momentous efforts from countless people all around the country to raise funds to support the health service. From running 5km, donating £5 and nominating five more friends to do the same, to a 99-year-old war veteran walking laps of his garden and raising millions in the process, the collective effort has been nothing short of incredible. Everyone - including the Premier League footballers - should be commended for doing their bit to help in this sad and frightening time. But the NHS is not a charity. We shouldn't have to do this. Serious questions have to be asked of the government when it is necessary for citizens to prop up the health service due to the failings of those in power. It shouldn't be an inevitability that our nurses, doctors and carers have to put their own lives in grave danger because of the incompetence of our leaders. Support them now, for they are heroes, but don't let it be forgotten just how severely they have been let down.
