Andy Burnham has reaffirmed Britain's support for Ukraine following a phone call with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as tensions between the Ukrainian president and Donald Trump threaten to complicate diplomatic efforts.
The conversation took place on Saturday evening, just hours after Trump publicly clashed with Zelenskyy.
According to Downing Street, Burnham acknowledged that the previous day had been a difficult one for Ukraine before reiterating Britain's “complete solidarity” with Kyiv.
The two leaders also discussed further measures to increase pressure on Moscow, with Burnham confirming that the UK would expand its sanctions against Russia following new designations announced earlier in the week.
They agreed to meet face to face within the coming days to continue discussions, although no date or location has been announced.
The call also focused on efforts to protect Ukraine's energy infrastructure and shipping routes.
Both leaders called for an immediate ceasefire covering energy facilities, urging Russia to halt attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and vessels in the Black Sea.
Downing Street said the discussions centred on the need to maintain pressure on Russia as the war continues.
The latest sanctions form part of Britain's broader efforts to restrict Moscow's ability to sustain its military campaign.
The planned meeting is expected to provide a further opportunity for the two leaders to discuss support for Ukraine, although details of the arrangements have yet to be confirmed.
