People have been advised to use alternative routes

Four London bridges were closed shortly after 11am on Tuesday as police assessed an “unattended item”.

The Metropolitan Police tweeted that Westminster Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, and Hungerford and Golden Jubilee footbridges have been closed “as a precaution while officers” check the item “in the vicinity of South Bank”.

Waterloo Station and the surrounding area between St Thomas’ Hospital and the BFI Imax cinema were also evacuated according to reports, with a large cordon in place bringing traffic to a standstill.

Train services were also disrupted with Southeastern rail confirming that rains can’t run between London Bridge and London Charing Cross “due to a security alert”.

The Met advised people to use alternative routes.

The London Eye also temporarily stopped people boarding, tweeting: “Although the incident is not related to the London Eye we have paused operation as a safety precaution. Please follow our social media feed for the updates.”

The Met later confirmed the item has been assessed and found not to be suspicious and that road closures would be “life imminently”.
