As early as this evening, Brits are facing fresh snow as the Met Office has warned in the latest weather forecast.
As 70mph winds lash wide swathes of the UK today, the snow is set to make a return as early as this evening, the Met Office says.
According to the national weather agency, parts of Britain could see snow within hours.
Travel disruption is also possible, forecasters have warned, as high winds and rain are set to lash other parts of the country.
As two yellow weather warnings have been issued, the Met Office warned that a period of strong winds, accompanied by heavy rain, is expected today with some transport disruption possible.
Five regions in the UK will be buried under four inches of snow, with the cold weather set to persist into Friday.
“Heavy rain clearing southeast across England and Wales tonight. Otherwise clear spells and showers, some wintry. More persistent rain and snow in the north, where patchy frost and ice. Windy”, the Met Office says for tonight.
The weekend is also looking chilly with a “widely frosty start to Saturday” followed by “sunshine and scattered showers, some wintry”.
“Lighter winds. Rain then showers on Sunday. Some hill snow. Further rain arriving in the west on Monday,” the Met Office says.
The national weather agency warnings cover northern Wales, the Midlands, northern England, Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland.
Ferry services risk cancelling, according to the Met Office, as flights may be delayed and bridges could impose restrictions on high-sided vehicles.
Across Scotland and Northern Ireland there will be heavy rain sweeping southeastwards, reaching northern and western England and Wales, the forecaster said.
