Some Everton fans applauded Steven Naismith – now other Everton fans are furious

Take that for selling me to these Canaries and condemning me to the Championship!

Steven Naismith was a popular player at Goodison Park, which might explain why the Everton fans applauded Scot for scoring against them last night.

A polite bunch, the Everton faithful, or maybe they just really enjoyed the manner of the former Toffee’s strike in Norwich’s 2-0 EFL Cup win on Tuesday night.

He may have scored only 18 goals in over 100 appearances for Everton, but his efforts tended towards the spectacular and he was a hard-working and honest player during his time on Merseyside.

Still, when Norwich offered over £8 million for the Scot he was shipped off to East Anglia last January, where he scored on his debut in a 5-4 defeat to Liverpool but did not find the net again in 12 appearances as the Canaries disappeared down the coal mine of relegation.

He scored on his first Norwich appearance this season also, against Blackburn, but was without a goal in four coming into Tuesday’s League Cup encounter with his former employers.

Five minutes before half-time, Naismith broke into the Everton box and with Ramiro Funes Mori closing fast he swung his left foot at the ball, slipped, fell on his arse and looped the flukiest of shots over Maarten Stekelenburg’s head and under the crossbar.

Even the Everton faithful stood to applaud, with cheers ringing round all four corners of Goodison Park, but not everyone was in favour of cheering the strike.
