Former US vice president Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, have adopted a German shepherd called Major from a rescue centre in Delaware.

The couple has been fostering the dog for the last eight months but confirmed over the weekend that they were to become the pooch’s full-time owner.

Major came to the Delaware Humane Association as a puppy along with its five siblings after “being exposed to something toxic in their home”, the rescue centre said. All of the litter have now been adopted.

“Today is Major’s lucky day!” the shelter said in a Facebook post. “Not only did Major find his forever home, but he got adopted by vice president Joe Biden and Dr Jill Biden! The Bidens have gotten to know Major while fostering him and are now ready to make the adoption official. Best of luck and thank you for being one of our friends for life!”

In a statement, the Biden family added: “We are so happy to welcome Major to the Biden family, and we are grateful to the Delaware Humane Association for their work in finding forever homes for Major and countless other animals.”

Major is the second doggy addition to the Biden family as they already own another German shepherd called Champ.
