Twitter has officially rebranded to X as part of Elon Musk's overarching plan to turn the social media platform into an 'everything app.'
Musk, who has owned Twitter since October 2022, announced the rebrand after launching a competition for users to submit their logo designs for use on the app.
After settling on the winning design, he posted to the platform confirming that X.com would redirect to Twitter.com and that the company would be referred to as X in internal documents.
He also confirmed the famous blue Twitter logo would be phased out.
In classic Musk fashion, the move has been met with a mixture of excited and dedicated passion from his fans, and consternation from his detractors.
Many commentators are pointing out that Twitter's brand recognition remains incredibly strong for a company of its age, and the prevalence of terms like 'tweet' and 'retweet' in the common lexicon points to the level of influence some brands can only dream of.
To get rid of this branding, in their eyes, represents a massive miscalculation.
However, his fans remain steadfast in their approval of his decision, claiming the futuristic and cleaner aesthetic provided by X presents its own opportunity.
Twitter/X's CEO Linda Yaccarino posted to the platform on Sunday to provide more detail on the switch.
She wrote: "It's an exceptionally rare thing - in life or in business - that you get a second chance to make another big impression. Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square."
