Donald Trump has changed his mind on inviting Canada to participate in his “Board of Peace”, as his frosty relations with the North American neighbors have taken another blow.
The US president, in a recent post on social media, said that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney would no longer be welcome on the board.
The Trump administration has said the board would have a broader mission, even though initially it was created to oversee the end of the war in Gaza.
The reasons for withdrawing the invitation to Carney weren’t specified by Trump, however, his post on Truth Social came after the prime minister raised concerns about the board.
Carney also pushed back sharply at Trump’s remark that “Canada lives because of the United States”, in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday.
He said on Thursday that “Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian”.
On Trump’s recent announcement, the office of the Canadian PM had no immediate comment.
Carney stood with other NATO allies in opposition to the Trump’s campaign to take control of Greenland from Denmark, and the withdrawing of the invitation deepens the fracture in their relationship.
Some Middle Eastern nations, such as Israel and the United Arab Emirates, have agreed to join Trump’s board, as the American leader said he expects over 50 countries to join after announcing the US plan for governance of Gaza.
However, many Western allies of the US haven’t signed on yet, while the UK and France have said they will not participate in the plan.
According to UK’s top diplomat, Yvette Cooper, part of the reason why Britain won’t sign on is because of Trump’s invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
