According to the corrections department, Minor is serving a 30-year sentence for manslaughter and is eligible for parole in 2037.
She was one of 27 transgender women at the Edna Mahan facility. Minor has been using a blog to complain about the treatment she has allegedly received during her time behind bars. On July 5, she claimed that officers forcibly removed her from Edna Mahan and beat her during her transfer to Garden State Youth Correctional facility. The DOC has refused to comment on the allegations but has said it is investigating. In a post 10 days later, Minor alleged that guards turned down her appeal to be strip searched by a female officer. She wrote: “When I arrived at Trenton state prison several guards strip searched me and placed me in the infirmary on constant watch.” “I don’t think DOC realises the psychological damage that has been done from moving me out of a women’s prison to a male facility, it’s harsh and, I don’t know what it is like to live as a man, and I refuse to ever revert back to such habits or behaviour.” https://twitter.com/justice4demi/status/1548011235563622401 The state of New Jersey has laws which allow prisoners to be housed in prisons according to their self-proclaimed sexual identity. This policy was established last year after a settlement agreement with the American Civil Liberties Union. The corrections department has said it is now looking to introduce "minor modifications" to these laws following the pregnancies at Edna Mahan. In 2020, a report found that the sexual abuse of inmates by staff at Edna Mahan was rife. According to the report's findings, inmates were raped, harassed, coerced into sexual acts, groped during strip searches and regularly called "bitches," and "hoes."
