Emma Morano is thought to have been the last person left in the world to have been born in the 19th century.

Emma Morano, the oldest person in the world, has died at the age of 117.

According to the BBC, Morano died at her home in her home in the city of Verbania in northern Italy. She was born on 29 November, 1899.

Dr Carlo Bava, who has been Morano’s doctor for 27 years, last saw her on Friday and said that her full-time carer had called him on Saturday to say that she had passed away.

Speaking of his visit to her on Friday, Bava said: “She thanked me and held my hand as usual.”

Longevity runs in the Morano family; her mother lived until she was 91 and several of her sisters lived until they were 100 and over.

According to the Gerontology Research Group (GRG), based in the United States, Violet Brown from Jamaica is now the world’s oldest human.

Born on March 10, 1900, she celebrated her 117th birthday last month.
