Teenager shot dead in broad daylight on south London street

Police were called to reports of gunshots last night.

A teenager was pronounced dead last night after suffering gunshot wounds in Kennington, south London.

Emergency services were called to Cooks Road at around 6.05pm on Saturday and he was discovered on nearby Warham Street. However, though paramedics battled to save the boy, he died just before 7pm.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Homicide and Major Crime Command have launched an investigation into the incident, with no arrests yet made.

The teenager’s next of kin have been informed of his death and a post-mortem examination will happen in due course.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at approximately 18:05hrs on Saturday, 5 May to reports of gunshots heard on Cooks Road in Southwark.

“Officers, including firearms officers, attended. A 17-year-old boy was found nearby on Warham Street suffering from a gunshot injury.

“The London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance provided first aid; he was pronounced dead at 18:56hrs.”

There have now been more than 60 fatal shootings and stabbings in the capital so far this year.
