The main suspect in the Strasbourg market attack has been killed by police

Chérif Chekatt, the suspect in the Strasbourg Christmas market attack, was shot dead by police on Thursday evening.

At around 9pm local time three police officers identified Chekatt on a street in the south east of the city.

He shot at them with an old revolver but was killed in the ensuing shootout.

Christophe Castaner, French interior minister, said: “They immediately returned fire and neutralised the assailant.

“I think it will help to get back to a life that I would describe as normal. With the death of this terrorist… citizens like me are relieved.”

Three people were killed in a shooting at Strasbourg’s iconic Christmas market, and another 13 injured, on Tuesday.

Chekatt was born in Strasbourg and police had earlier searched for him in the same area of the city. He had a string of convictions, including armed robbery, and was on a watch list having been identified as an extremism risk.
