No, your eyes really aren’t deceiving you. Steven Gerrard did in fact score for Bulgaria. Well, almost.

The name of the player in question is Steven Gerrard Goate and by all accounts, he is going to be one to watch in the future.

Spotted on X, the 15-year-old was featuring for Bulgaria in their Euro Under-17 qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday and made an early impact as he opened the scoring after six minutes, getting on the end of a cross to give the hosts the lead after six minutes.

Bosnia found themselves back in the game shortly after the half hour mark when they equalised but unfortunately for Gerrard Goate he went from hero to zero in the 84th minute after receiving a straight red card.

Although his game ended badly, the Bulgarian media seem to be excited about the potential of this young forward, with one outlet even dubbing him the ‘Bulgarian Kylian [Mbappe]’.

X users though spotted the name and while he may not quite be at the level of the Liverpool legend just yet, comparisons were still made.

One person said: “Naming your kid Steven Gerrard is the most intentional thing I’ve seen.”

Another wrote: “You just know pops was preparing project broski from timeeee.

“His dad is deffo the biggest Stevie G stan going,” said a third.

A fourth wrote: “A former neighbour of mine named his son Coutinho. Seems to be a Liverpool thing.”

If he goes on to have half the career that the original Steven Gerrard did, he’s onto big things.
