A SpaceX rocket has exploded, leaving debris to rain from the sky.
The huge SpaceX rocket, which is the largest ever created, exploded just minutes after take off on Thursday, March 6.
After launching in Texas, the unmanned ship spun wildly out of control due to ‘a rapid unscheduled disassembly.’
Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or damage, however debris and wreckage was spotted falling from the sky as far away as the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory off the Florida coast.
The 123 meter spaceship was set to re-enter Earth’s orbit over the Indian Ocean, but only the ship’s booster managed to land safely after the disassembly.
Officials from SpaceX revealed that teams immediately co-ordinated with safety officials for ‘pre-planned contingency responses’ after the craft started to lose control.
Additionally, they said a self-destruct mechanism may have been activated as a precaution.
This is just the latest of a series of failed launches for Elon Musk's spacefaring company, with another explosion having occurred in January.
An employee of the company, Dan Huot, said: "Unfortunately this happened last time too, so we have some practice at this now."
In a statement from SpaceX, it was said that the company would review data to gain a better understanding of ‘[the] root cause’ of the misfire.
They also noted that the explosion happened after the loss of ‘several’ engines.
"As always, success comes from what we learn, and today’s flight will offer additional lessons to improve Starship’s reliability," they continued.
