Serena Williams is a real life superhero, but we didn’t quite expect dog food to end up being her kryptonite…

The tennis superstar was laid low this week after a bout of sickness caused by trying some of her dog’s gourmet puppy chow.

Telling her fans of the news via Snapchat, Serena explained that curiosity got the best of her while serving her dog, Chip, some dinner.

Serena took pictures of a menu of dog food offered up by the hotel she was staying in in Rome, and commented that one of the meals “looked nice”.

Two hours after having a spoonful of Chip’s salmon and rice meal, Serena soon understood why that was a meal intended for dogs.

Talking in a Snapchat video, Williams said: “I thought, ‘What the heck, I’m gonna try a piece. It looks good’. So I ate a spoonful. Don’t judge me!

“Let’s fast forward two hours. I just ran to the toilet like I thought I was gonna pass out.”

“I mean it did taste weird. I force-swallowed it. It tasted kind of like house-cleaner thing. I don’t know what they put in these dog foods, but Chip liked it.”

“But I don’t think it’s consumable for humans. They should have wrote that! So now I feel really sick. It was just a spoonful but I don’t feel so good.”

Serena managed to recover from her illness in time for her tennis match against Christina McHale at the Italian Open.

She won, naturally.

Now in the quarter-finals of the tournament, the world number one is a heavy favourite to win the tennis event. Because when you’re Serena Williams, sickness is just a mild inconvenience.
