In a video posted on Twitter he said that he had felt "a bit groggy" the night before so took a lateral flow that came out positive.

He said that he is "grateful" that he's had two jabs of the vaccine and that his symptoms are "very mild" so far.

Javid continues: "I also want to take this opportunity to thank everyone that's involved in our national vaccine rollout programme, truly the best of its kind anywhere in the world.

"If you haven't had your jabs yet please get out there and get them as soon as you can. And if like me, you might feel a bit groggy or you think you might have come into contact with someone who is positive, please also take a lateral flow test too.

"If everyone plays their part you're not only protecting yourself and your loved ones but you're also safeguarding the NHS and helping to preserve our way of life. Thank you."

Javid is the latest high-profile political figure to test positive for Covid. Back in April last year, Prime Minister Boris Johnson tested positive for the virus and ended up spending three nights in intensive care.

On Monday, all remaining social distancing and lockdown restrictions are to be lifted in England. This is despite soaring numbers of cases across the country, with the UK recording more than 50,000 daily cases on Friday, the highest figure since mid-January.

There are calls from scientists and medical experts across both the UK and the globe for the so-called 'Freedom Day' to be pushed back.
