Track Storm Goretti's progress here
A rare red weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for parts of the UK as Storm Goretti approaches.
The French-named storm has been talked about lots in the past few days, with it making landfall today.
Initially a number of yellow and amber warnings had been issued for across the UK, warning of snow, ice, rain and wind with many of these warnings stretching into Friday.
Now, the Met Office has just issued a rare red warning in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for strong winds between the times of 16:00 and 23:00.
Gusts of up to 100mph are expected and could even surpass this ceiling figure.
The Met Office says a red warning means:
- Damage to buildings and homes, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down. Flying debris resulting in danger to life.
- Roads, bridges and railway lines closed, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights
- Power cuts affecting other services, such as mobile phone coverage
- Very large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and homes
People in these areas are advised to stay indoors during this time period and to stay away from coastal areas.
Storm Goretti is an example of a 'weather bomb' - this is where pressure falls by 24 hPa within 24 hours.
However, this coupled with the cold weather brought on Arctic winds means that Goretti is more of a snowstorm rather than any old storm.
