Rangers fan missing in Seville

The football fan’s family grew fearful when he went to the toilet and didn’t come back

The Rangers fan who went missing after going to the toilet during the Europa League final in Seville has been found safe and well.

Gordon Smith, 42, from Renfrew was over in Spain with his 23-year-old brother Craig watching Rangers play against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday. The 42-year-old went missing when he went to use the toilet after the match finished and failed to come back. Gordon’s family could not get in contact with him in the hours that followed, despite his brother frantically looking for him.

Speaking to the Daily Record yesterday, Gordon’s Sister, Danielle Ashleigh, said her brother’s disappearance as “out of character”, and that the family grew more fearful when they found out that Gordon’s phone, cash and passport were believed to have been stolen.

“Gordon was meant to be staying at some farmhouse but I don’t know the details of this,” Danielle said when her brother was missing, “But I reckon if he had made his way back there he’d have contacted someone at home to let us help him get home.”

Thankfully, Danielle has since confirmed Gordon was located shortly before 11am on Friday. She had even drafted in a local Seville resident who had planned to liaise with police in a bid to find her brother.

Craig is now preparing to fly home after being issued with an emergency travel document.

Danielle said: “Craig is due to fly back today. He’s to pick up his emergency passport which we’ve had confirmation for so we’re hoping he calls soon so we can tell him to go get it.”
