Reports emerged earlier this week of an investigation into Hakimi

PSG and Morocco footballer Achraf Hakimi has been charged with rape.

On Monday, there were reports that French prosecutors had launched an investigation into the full-back over the alleged rape of a 24-year-old woman.

She is said to have accused the Moroccan international of raping her at his home in a Paris suburb on February 25.

Now, French prosecutors have told AFP the footballer has been charged with rape.

Hakimi was questioned by prosecutors from the Hauts-de-Seine Territorial Security on Thursday in connection with accusations from a 24-year-old woman, say L’Equipe. He has subsequently been charged.

According to reports from L’Equipe, the alleged incident took place at the home of the Moroccan international on February 25 in the location of Boulogne-Billancourt.

Hakimi’s lawyer denied the accusations on Thursday. They said: “The accusations are false. He is calm and is making himself available to the authorities.”

Hakimi, who was born in Madrid, was part of the Morocco team that finished fourth in the World Cup in Qatar.

His penalty secured a 3-0 shoot-out win over Spain to steer Morocco into uncharted territory, with the north African side going on to become the first from the Arab world to reach the last four at a World Cup.

He joined PSG from Inter Milan in January 2021 and has made 72 appearance for the club, helping them to win the Ligue 1 title last season.

Earlier this week, he appeared at the Best Fifa Football Awards, and was named in the FIFPRO men’s world team of the year.

PSG released a statement earlier this week before Hakimi was charged but after the accusations were brought to light.

It read: “The club supports the player, who has firmly denied the accusations and trusts the justice system. Paris St-Germain is an institution that promotes respect on and off the pitch.”
