Primark issues urgent recall for Halloween products over asbestos risk

Tests have raised concerns over the sand inside these gonks

Two Primark Halloween gonk decorations have been pulled from sale after tests found that the sand inside some of the products could contain traces of asbestos.

The products were on sale in stores between July and August and come in two designs: one has a pumpkin hat, while the other has a witch’s hat and grey hair.

Their model numbers are 991174794 and 991179148, and the corresponding barcodes are 212047125 and 212080261.

"Testing has shown the sand material inside some products may contain trace levels of asbestos, and this may present a risk if inhaled," the retailer said.

The official recall notice advises anyone who owns one of the affected gonks to stop using it immediately and keep it away from children.

The decorations can be returned to the nearest Primark store for a full refund, and customers do not need to provide proof of purchase.

Customers are being urged to pass the warning on

If a gonk has been damaged and its filling is exposed, customers should take extra care by wearing gloves and a mask and using damp cloths to clean the area, helping to prevent dust from becoming airborne.

Both the decoration and any materials used during cleaning should be placed in two sealed bags.

For an intact gonk, Primark recommends putting it in a strong plastic bag, securing it with two layers of tape, clearly marking the bag and storing it somewhere children cannot reach.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards has also told owners to stop using the recalled items immediately.

Primark apologised for the concern caused, adding: "Spread the word about this recall, especially if you know that the recalled product was offered, borrowed or sold to someone else."
