A Premier League club have been handed the biggest PSR fine in history after breaching Premier League rules.
Back in late 2023 and during the 2023/24 season, Everton were handed a 10 points deduction for breaching the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability rules in the 2021/22 season.
After an appeal, the points deduction was reduced to only six points.
The season ended, and then relegated Burnley announced that they planned to sue Everton, as clubs are able to seek compensation from other clubs for rule breaches that negatively affect them.
Now though, it has been reported by The Lawyer that the Toffees must pay compensation and interest of nearly £40million.
This is as it is believed that if the points deduction would have been given in 2022, then Burnley would have stayed up at the expense of Everton.
At the end of the 2021/22 campaign, Everton narrowly survived relegation, finishing the season on 39 points. Burnley went down on 35 points, with Leeds 17th with 38 points.
Burnley sought after £50million from Everton in compensation, though the £40m figure was awarded, taking into account the value of the lost opportunity for Burnley to stay in the top flight and the likelihood of this success.
Burnley go into the next campaign as a Championship club, though the £40million will bolster their firepower in the market.
