One of the biggest blockbusters of the summer is finally racing onto cinema screens across the country. This is F1 the Movie. With a rumoured budget of $200m and Lewis Hamilton attached as a producer, it promised to transport you head first into the world of Formula 1. And it delivered.
But that was to be expected with Joseph Kosinski as director, the same man who helmed Top Gun: Maverick. Kosinski pulled off the impossible on Top Gun, taking a cult classic and elevating the sequel with a visceral experience that left viewers feeling like they were manning the fighter jets themselves. It’s a sensation he has successfully applied to F1 the Movie, leaving you at the wheel as you screech around hairpin bends at Monzo, Silverstone and beyond.
No surprises then that Maverick himself, Mr Tom Cruise, decided to crash the premiere. Eager to get a first glimpse of the summer spectacular on glorious IMAX, it led to some iconic imagery of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt on the red carpet. Two era defining actors sharing the stage.
But that wasn’t all. Lewis Hamilton sent the Leicester Square fans into a frenzy, along with football sensation Gareth Bale and rising British star Damson Idris. Chuck in Raye, Ed Sheeran, Naomi Campbell and the usual spread of social media stars and F1 the Movie had well and truly roared out of the pit lane. Even Alex Hendy, aka ‘the Schooner Scorer’ was on hand to down a pint of the glamorous affair.
He would have discovered that the drink of choice on the red carpet was Heineken 0.0. With 73% of Gen Z having now tried alcohol-free drinks, and 44% asking for more 0.0 options in pubs, it felt only right that one of the biggest movies of the summer supported this message, especially as cinema looks to attract the next generation in the face of its own challenges.
Make no mistake, the celebrities on display and the movie itself was intoxicating enough. A sober experience has never been better.
