The NYPD cop who went viral after a video emerged of her giving her l
ieutenant a lap dance has been suspended for yelling at New Jersey state troopers after a relative was arrested for drink driving.
Vera Mekuli, who made headlines around the world for the lap dance in December, is said to have shown up at the state police barracks in Totowa, on May 8, in her “bare feet” and smelling like booze, according to an internal NYP report, dated Friday, the
New York Post said.
Mekuli, according to the report, identified herself as an NYPD officer and demanded to know why her brother-in-law had just been arrested for driving while intoxicated.
After a staff sergeant told her the 27-year-old he had “procedures to follow” and that the troopers would not be made available, the report said, Mekuli became irate and “demanded to speak with a lieutenant".
Mekuli, who joined the force in February 2021, reportedly then began recording the staff sergeant with her phone and said, “you guys are talking out of your ass; none of this was done correctly”.
Mekuli was asked if anyone in her party wanted to file a complaint, but nobody did, the Post reported.
New Jersey State Police Office of Professional Standards was informed of the incident and found the troopers followed proper procedures.
NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau later investigated Mekuli's conduct and she was suspended without pay.
During a holiday bash in December, Mekuli was videoed grinding on top of then-44th Precinct Leuitenant Nick McGarry at Rory Dolan's, an Irish bar in Yonkers, in an incident she later apologised for.
However, she also later question why the incident had become a big deal, telling
TMZ: “I feel like just because, mainly — I’m a female, dressed the way I was, being a rookie — things were different.
“Had it been a man doing it, I feel like it would have been more of a joking matter and it would have stayed in-house versus go public the way it did with me.”
McGarry was later reassigned from the Bronx precinct to subway patrol.
