A former Miss Brazil has died at the age of 27 after a massive bleed and heart attack five days after she received a routine tonsil removal surgery.

Gleycy Correia, who was crowned Miss Brazil in 2018, died on Monday, June 21, five days after a routine tonsillectomy at a private clinic. The Macae-born beauty queen was left in a coma in April following an enormous haemorrhage and subsequent cardiac event.

“She had surgery to remove her tonsils and after five days at home, she had a haemorrhage,” said family priest Lidiane Alves Oliviera, according to the Mail Online. “She went to Unimed and had a cardiac arrest on April 4 and since then she was in a coma, with no neurological activity. Today she passed away.”

Her body was sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute of Macae for a full autopsy and will be buried tomorrow (June 22).

Family friend Pastor Jak Abreu said Correia’s relatives believe there was some form of medical malpractice during the operation.

“God chose this day to collect our princess. We know that she will be greatly missed, but she will now be brightening the sky with her smile…” he said. “To everyone who prayed, thank you very much. May the Lord reward every prayer of love and all these days together.

He added: “She fulfilled her purpose and left her legacy of love in us. We ask for your prayers for the family and friends that the Holy Spirit may bring comfort in this difficult time.”
