Millions urged to check for letter confirming £150 energy bill discount

The energy discount letters start arriving this week

People who may qualify for a £150 contribution towards their energy bills should start checking their post from Thursday, 22 October, as the next round of Warm Home Discount notifications gets underway.

The letters will explain how eligible households can receive the reduction and whether any action is needed to secure it.

While some recipients will have the money deducted from their bills automatically, others may need to contact the scheme’s helpline and provide additional information.

The notification process is expected to run until January 2027. Anyone asked to confirm further details has until 26 February 2027 to do so if they want to receive the discount.

Around six million households across Britain are expected to benefit from the scheme.

Its rules were broadened last year, enabling almost 2.3 million more families to access the support. About one million of those additional households had children.

Energy bill help forms part of wider cost-of-living measures

Polly Billington, the Minister for Energy Consumers, said the Government wanted to help families manage the financial pressure associated with winter.

“I know that many families will be struggling with their energy bills this winter.

“That is why I urge those who think they qualify for the Warm Home Discount to keep an eye out for a letter confirming their eligibility.

“Energy is an absolute essential, which is exactly why in October we cut VAT on all electricity bills and earlier this year we removed £150 of costs off bills, giving families breathing space this winter.”

The Warm Home Discount is part of a wider set of measures aimed at reducing everyday expenses. These include a £2 cap on bus fares and an earlier £150 reduction in energy costs.

The Government has also said savings introduced through last year’s Budget, amounting to an average of £150 in energy costs, will continue to be reflected in bills over the coming years.

Households told how to avoid fake energy discount messages

There is also a warning for households to be wary of fraudulent messages claiming to relate to the payment.

Anyone seeking clarification should use their energy supplier’s established contact channels, rather than clicking unfamiliar links or sharing financial information in response to unexpected emails, texts or calls.

The scheme is set to continue until the 2030/31 financial year, following an extension announced earlier this year.

Ned Hammond, deputy director of policy for customers at Energy UK, said households facing difficulties paying their bills should also speak directly to their supplier to discuss the assistance available.

“The Warm Home Discount offers vital help for millions of households through the colder months, and this week the government will begin sending letters to eligible customers to explain how the support will be delivered.

“As we face the prospect of another winter of high and volatile energy prices, we encourage anyone struggling with their bill to contact their supplier to see what help is available for them.”
