They went on to beat Germany in their opening game

The Mexico squad prepared for the 2018 World Cup by inviting 30 prostitutes to a sex party, it has emerged.

TVNotas reports reveal that nine members of the national team partied with the escorts at a private compound in Mexico City following a friendly win over Scotland at the Estadio Azteca.

They recorded a comfortable win over the Scots before beating Germany in their opening fixture of the Russia 2018 World Cup, eventually succumbing to Brazil in the knock-out stages.

Grainy images have since been released by news outlets in the country of the players arriving at a party ahead of the tournament, with one headline reading: “The true farewell of the Tri!”

According to reports, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Raul Jimenez were amongst those in attendance, as were brothers Jonathan and Giovani dos Santos.

It is also understood that Carlos Salcedo and Marco Fabian, who were teammates at Eintracht Frankfurt at the time, also visited the compound during the party.

Despite their antics, the players involved were not sanctioned by the Mexican Football Federation as the incident had taken place during their free time and did not cause them to miss training.

General secretary Guillermo Cantu explained: “A free day is a free day and those are the risks that one runs with freedom.”

The controversy echoes similar scandals which have swirled around the team in recent years.

In September 2010, Mexico players partied with women after a game in Monterrey. On that occasion, all participants were fined while defender Efrain Juarez and forward Carlos Vela were suspended from the selection for six months.

In June 2011, shortly before a trip to Argentina to participate in the Copa America, Mexican players hired sex workers in a hotel in Quito, Ecuador. They were fined and suspended from the national team for half a year.
