Johnny Depp wins right to sue Amber Heard

Some believe that, while Depp won’t be working for Disney anytime soon, he could still make a huge comeback

Johnny Depp‘s career will make a comeback following his win, a journalist has claimed, while another believes Amber Heard is now “unemployable”.

The Pirates of the Carribean star was awarded $15m in damages on Wednesday, after a jury found that his ex-wife, Amber Heard had defamed him. The jury also found the Heard had been defamed, and was awarded $2m, though the Aquaman actor has already announced plans to appeal.

Karl Stefanovic, who hosts the Today show, said that, while it won’t be easy, Johnny Depp will make a comeback, MailOnline reports.

Speaking to LA-based entertainment correspondent Sam Rubin, Stefanovic said: “I mean, you can’t imagine him going and working for Disney tomorrow, given the admissions he made about his own substance abuse. But you have to imagine also there’s going to be [career] possibilities for him down the track; whereas for Amber, it’s going to be difficult.

“Effectively, the jury came back with a verdict that she defamed him, that she did lie. That is, at the end of the day, something that she can’t deny… [It] is very difficult for her to get over that.”

Rubin said Depp’s performance could even lead to a career resurgence.

The entertainment expert said people enjoyed seeing the “90s heart-throb give evidence and field questions during cross-examination, with many of his wry and self-effacing responses going viral on TikTok.”

While Rubin thought Depp showed “candour” and charm” while discussing low points on alcohol and drugs, Heard’s manner was sometimes “shrill and “disingenuous” in comparison, he said.

Rubin believes Depp may also receive support from the “sober community” of filmmakers and producers who empathise with the actor and give him work.

In contrast, American journalist Megyn Kelly said Heard is now completely “unemployable” as Mediaite reports.

Discussing the verdict with Floyd Abrams on his Speaking Freely podcast, Kelly said: “I think she’s professionally ruined for the time being. I’m not sure whether she comes back from this, even in a town that’s very liberal and that would be much more in the knee jerk ‘I believe all women camp.’

“The problem for her in Hollywood is not that a jury has said what it’s said. The problem for her in Hollywood is the nation watched this trial and they decided she was a liar and he was a truth-teller.

Kelly continued: “Yes, they were manipulated by the press. Yes, they saw YouTube mashups that the jury didn’t see and all of that, but they had the opportunity to decide with her in the court of public opinion, if that’s how they were feeling and in watching her testimonial and so on, they didn’t.

“Hollywood, before it’s woke these days, has gotta be somewhat business-minded and capitalist. There was already a petition with, I don’t know, between three and 4 million. Maybe it’s more now to get her booted out of the next Aquaman sequel.”
