John Bercow is known for being outspoken and having no patience for nonsense, and today was no different.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, wearing a rose tie, Bercow said that Boris Johnson is “spewing falsehoods on a sustained and uninterrupted basis,” and said he voted for Labour’s candidate in the London mayoral election, Sadiq Khan.

Bercow was speaker in 2019 when the government was found to have unlawfully prorogued parliament and misled the Queen, he earned himself a reputation for being sassy in the House of Commons.

“I served along five prime ministers, four during my tenure as speaker – Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson,” he told hosts Alastair Campbell and Susanna Reid.

“None of the four proceeding Boris Johnson were, in my judgement, guilty of deliberately misleading the House of Commons.”

During his appearance, he provided some examples of the prime minister’s falsehoods.

“I could give you a number of example [of the lying],” he said.

“It is wrong, and provably so, for him to say there are 400,000 fewer families living in poverty – nobody recognises this statistic.”

Reid attempted to push back on some of Bercow’s comments and received a hostle reception.

Shaking her head, she said: “yes, except you say spewing falsehoods but if you look to the claims – look, I am not here to defend the prime minster…”.

Bercow hit back: “No – you call him Boris because he is your favourite puppy dog, apparently.”

When asked by Campbell if he still considered himself a conservative, he said bluntly “no!”

It looks like Bercow is going to continue to be a thorn in the Tory party’s side…
