Joe Lycett has become the latest big name to reveal his stance on the newly vacant Match of the Day job, suggesting he is “very much available.”
As regular BBC football pundits continue to drop like flies following the BBC’s decision to suspend Gary Lineker from hosting duties, Lycett has hilariously thrown his hat into the ring.
On Friday, the BBC announced Lineker would be “stepping back” from his role on the football highlights programme following comments he made regarding the Home Office’s policy on small boat Channel crossings.
MOTD regulars Alan Shearer and Ian Wright both quickly tweeted that they won’t be appearing on tomorrow’s edition of the football highlights show, with Alex Scott, Micah Richards and Jermaine Jenas later revealing they would also stand in solidarity with Lineker.
Lycett, though, was not so quick to distance himself from the job, tweeting “I have informed the BBC that I am very much available for tomorrow’s MOTD.”
The comedian, who is known for his pranks, also added a photograph of himself with the caption “I’m actually very right-wing and I love it.”
Whilst it’s very, very doubtful that the BBC would take Lycett up on his, ahem, generous offer to host the show, you really never know…
Lineker has been at the centre of controversy in recent days after he compare the Home Office’s policy on small boat Channel crossings to “Germany in the 30s.”
The Match of the Day presenter, who has 8.6 million followers on Twitter, commented on a video put out by home secretary Suella Braverman in which she unveiled new controversial plans to stop migrant boats crossing the Channel.
Responding to the plans, Lineker tweeted: “Good heavens, this is beyond awful.”
He then replied to a user who challenged him because it was “easy to pontificate when it doesn’t affect you”.
Lineker wrote: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.
“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”
