Hay fever suffers are rushing out to buy a new, cheap medication that can be purchased over the counter, with some suggesting it’s a ‘miracle’ cure.

Up until recently, this must-have hay fever medicine was only available via an NHS prescription to all those who had convinced their doctor that their symptoms were bad enough.

Now however, these super strength pills, which typically came with a £9 prescription fee, can be bought for less money in a handful of popular high street stores – and they’re selling out everywhere.

If you’re sick of a scratchy throat and itchy eyes caused by the recent warm weather, then the pills you want to look out for are called Fexofenadine Hydrochloride – or Allevia and Treathay as they’re known via their UK brand names. For the first time ever, these high strength tablets can be bought direct from the likes of Boots, Superdrug and popular supermarket chains like Asda and Tesco.

The best part is that in some stores this remedy can be yours for as little as £4 a box, with others selling them for £7 depending on the number of tablets you’re after.

With 2022’s uncharacteristically sunny weather making an appearance in recent weeks, sufferers of this all-too-common affliction have been running out to buy these pills, with some saying that using them makes you feel like you don’t have hay fever at all any more.

“I went to three different supermarkets trying to find it. It was completely sold out in Asda Handsworth in Sheffield, and it was sold out at another two in Leeds,” one customer recently told Yorkshire Livedetailing their experiences of trying to get hold of the pills that are said to be stronger than other hay fever medicines like Cetirizine Hydrochloride and Loratadine.

“I bought some online but even on Amazon Prime, there’s about a week long delay on orders and it took a week to arrive on the ‘next day’ delivery service.

“The reason is, it works. It’s much more potent than regular hay fever tablets, so my reactions are much more under control.

They added: “I don’t know what I would have done without it this year, when the pollen has been absolutely crazy.

“Last year I got some on prescription, but now they’re available over the counter it’s much easier and cheaper to get hold of them – until they all sell out.”

Meanwhile, those on social media have also been singing their praises:
