Guy wakes up after big night out to find a fox ‘trying to pull his trousers off’

Matt Tate

“Big night, mate?” “Nothing too crazy, if you don’t include that fox that tried to knick my trousers.”

The above exchange may well have been similar to the one Steve Gould had with a friend after the weirdest ending to a booze-up we’ve heard for some time.

The 35-year-old tube worker was on a night out with his mates in Soho, London and, a little bit worse for wear, nodded off on the train back to his native Essex – missing the stop he was supposed to get off at.

He woke up in Leyton, and like any sensible drunk person decided the best course of action would be to find the nearest bus stop and bed down for the night.

When he woke up – around 3:30am according to Steve’s account – a mischievous little fox was gnawing at his trousers. It could easily be the opening scene of the British version of The Hangover.

Steve later found bite marks in his trainers and trousers, but given the fact that foxes are not really renowned for being the friendliest of creatures – even those as cute as this one – it sounded like he was pretty unfazed by the whole affair.

Speaking to The Telegraph, he said:  “It must’ve woken me. When I came to, I just thought, ‘what the hell’. I thought, ‘what the hell are you doing?’

“It was just curious – I wasn’t scared at all because it seemed to be saying either, ‘come with me and have an adventure’ or ‘get your kit off’.

“I immediately reached for phone my phone in my pocket and managed to get a few shots. It didn’t flinch or move or anything – he was absolutely fearless.”

Could Steve Gould officially have coined the term ‘hair of the fox’?
