More than 2,000 people could lose their jobs

Nearly 50 sites of a major restaurant chain are facing risk of closure, as their future has been put in doubt.

The sites affected include those in major cities such as London, Birmingham and Glasgow.

Over 2,000 staff members of 49 locations of TGI Fridays are facing uncertainty following a notice of intention to appoint administrators, which was filed last week by the group’s parent company.

Thanks to this notice, Liberty Bar and Restaurant, the company responsible for TGI Fridays' UK operations, can continue trading while trying to find a solution.

Phil Broad, president of TGI Fridays international franchising, confirmed the dramatic step in a statement, while he reiterated that all restaurants would remain open over the Christmas period.

“The Directors of TGI Fridays UK can confirm that a notice of intent to appoint administrators was filed with the court,” he said.

“This step brings the new owners, who assumed control last month, closer to securing and strengthening the long-term future of TGI Fridays in the UK.”

The number one priority remains the protection of the 2,000 members of staff and its remaining restaurants, according to Broad.

The restaurant franchise has been operating for decades across the UK, after first opening in 1986.

A total of 35 restaurants of TGI Fridays UK were closed in October 2024, but 51 were saved as part of a rescue deal.
