Former Strictly judge Len Goodman dies aged 78

The legendary Strictly figure had been suffering from a short illness, and passed away on Saturday night at a hospice in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

A statement from his manager, Jackie Gill, on Monday said: "It is with great sadness to announce that Len Goodman has passed away peacefully, aged 78.

"A much loved husband, father and grandfather who will be sorely missed by family, friends and all who knew him."

He was head judge on Strictly from the show's first series in 2004, all the way until 2016. Goodman became hugely popular with viewers for his knowledge, humour and sometimes no-nonsense attitude on the show.

And, of course, he'll be forever known for his iconic 'seveeeen' scores.

He also worked on the American version of the show, Dancing with the Stars from 2005 to 2022, before leaving the show to spend more time with his family.

Born in London in 1944, Goodman started out his career as a welder in Woolwich, before he took up dancing at the age of 19.

He later turned professional, winning several competitions and retiring in his late twenties to become a professional judge and teacher.

After this, he set up his own dancing school in Kent, the Goodman Dance Academy.

He leaves behind his wife Sue, who he married in 2012.

Paying tribute to Goodman, BBC director general Tim Davie said: "Len Goodman was a wonderful, warm entertainer who was adored by millions.

"He appealed to all ages and felt like a member of everyone's family. Len was at the very heart of Strictly's success. He will be hugely missed by the public and his many friends and family."
