Emmanuel Macron has hit back at Donald Trump after the US president made mocking comments about his marriage.
During a speech on Wednesday, Trump was discussing his war in Iran and the refusal from Western allies to support him in the conflict.
He said: “I called up France, Macron, whose wife treats him extremely badly.”
Following laughter in the room, Trump added that Macron is “still recovering from the right to the jaw.”
Now, Macron has responded to the unsavoury comments, labelling them “neither elegant nor up to standard.”
Macron was asked by French channel TF1 if he had any response to Trump’s comments, to which the French president replied: “We’re talking about serious things. We’re talking about war, we’re talking about women and men in combat, about civilians who have been killed, about the war in this region.
“We’re also talking about the consequences of this war on our economies. I’m thinking about our compatriots, the Americans are experiencing the same things, the price of petrol and gas which is going up.
“So the comments that you’re referring to are neither elegant nor up to standards, there you go. So, I’m not going to respond, it doesn’t deserve a response.”
