Emily Thornberry ambushes and embarrasses Defence Secretary Michael Fallon live on TV

The Shadow Foreign Secretary left Fallon red-faced after tripping him up live on air

You’d never guess there was a General Election on the way.

Labour MP and Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry took Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon to task on The Andrew Marr Show this morning over his attendance of a party with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Host Andrew Marr opened up the bout by asking Thornberry about the attacks on Labour’s patriotism following the resurgence of a story about Jeremy Corbyn’s relationship with the IRA.

Thornberry then turned the question on Fallon by positing that “if you judge people by who they spend time with, the question has to be: do you remember where you were on 27th May 2007?”

The Defence Secretary said that he didn’t, leading Thornberry to reveal that he was in Syria at a reception celebrating the reelection of Assad.

Fallon responded by confirming that he was indeed in Syria and had met Assad, but rejected the claim the he was celebrating with him.

Thornberry then went on a further assault by dismissing Fallon’s claim that, if Labour were to win the General Election, she would “negotiate the future of the Falklands.”

“That is bollocks,” she said-without-quite-saying, prompting a mock-shocked response from Marr. “That is untrue,” she corrected, laughing.
